Why This Dog Was So Special

I was in first grade when my parents surprised me with a puppy. She was a mixed-breed dog who looked exactly like a Beagle, except her coat was a beautiful, solid shade of ginger.
We were perfectly matched. She was every bit as spirited and feisty as I was. I named her Zsa-Zsa after the famous actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, who was popular at the time. Looking back, it seemed like a very glamorous name for a little ginger puppy.

Our favorite place to play was the long hallway in our house. I would close all the doors, scatter her toys, and the two of us would spend hours wrestling, chasing, and playing together. I loved that little dog with all my heart. In fact, I still have a few small scars from our rough-and-tumble adventures together.

Zsa-Zsa was full of energy and always eager for excitement. If she slipped out the front door, she would take off running while I chased after her. We didn’t know much about dog training back then, so “come” was not a command she had learned. Eventually, I would catch up to her, scoop her into my arms, and carry her home.

She had a mischievous streak, too. If the neighborhood paperboy happened to ride by, Zsa-Zsa would race out to greet him in a way that was far more enthusiastic than he appreciated. At the time, I thought it was funny. As an adult, I realize it was behavior that needed training and guidance.

As she grew older, some of her protective instincts became difficult for our family to manage. When I was in fifth grade, my father made the difficult decision to find another home for her. At that age, I didn’t understand. I was heartbroken and losing her was one of the first experiences that taught me how painful it can be to say goodbye to a beloved dog.
Looking back now, Zsa-Zsa gave me more than childhood memories. She taught me some of my earliest lessons about responsible pet ownership, training, and the commitment that comes with sharing your life with an animal.

But more than anything, she was my best friend.

This photograph is the only picture I still have from when she first arrived. Whenever I look at it, I don’t think about the challenges. I remember a little ginger puppy, a long hallway, and countless happy hours spent playing together. Those memories remain some of the sweetest of my childhood.

As dogs age, hearing loss may diminish their connection & heighten their risks, but it doesn’t have to limit their joy.

If dogs live long enough, they will most likely lose their hearing. Beyond missing the friendly call of their owner, dog’s lives are profoundly affected by deafness. A hearing-impaired dog is more likely to become injured, be abandoned, and be prematurely euthanized.
