Why This Dog Was So Special

In 1969, Lady, a four-year-old Springer Spaniel with a history of motherhood, came into our lives, forging an unbreakable bond. By then, she had already nurtured two litters and had a gentle soul that resonated deeply with me at fourteen. We became inseparable companions, sharing everyday moments and extraordinary adventures alike.

Each night, Lady claimed her spot at the foot of my bed. Daylight brought anticipation, as she perched by the living room window, her eyes fixed on the path that would bring me back from school. Her presence was a constant in the flux of teenage life, providing comfort and joy in her quiet watch.

One of Lady’s cherished rituals was retrieving the afternoon paper from the driveway—a task she performed with the innate grace of a Springer Spaniel known for their ‘soft mouth.’ Despite soaking each newspaper with care, not a single page bore a mark. Sundays brought the hefty Los Angeles Times, which she would drag through the door with triumphant determination, earning our heartfelt praise and shared laughter.

Our walks were frequent and filled with the simple pleasure of companionship, exploring the natural tapestry of Newport Beach’s Back Bay. The area was a thriving estuary, rich with wildlife—a perfect backdrop for a young girl and her dog. Along with friends and their dogs, we navigated the trails and sometimes ventured to the beach, where Lady would tentatively engage with the lapping waves, her bravery outshining her apprehension.

Even after I left for college, Lady’s loyalty never wavered. My mother often shared how she continued to find solace at the foot of my bed, waiting. My weekend returns were always greeted with her effusive joy, reminding me of the unwavering love only a dog can offer.

My folks moved to Medford, OR, in 1977 marking a new chapter for our family, but soon after, Lady’s health declined. In 1978, with heavy hearts, we made the tender decision to let her go. It was my first encounter with the profound grief of losing a dog—a pain so deep and piercing that it steered me away from canine companionship for many years.

Today, 46 years later, the mere memory of Lady still stirs a profound emotion within me and easily brings tears to my eyes. The grief of her loss is a testament to the depth of our bond, a reminder that the love of a dog is a rare gift—pure, unconditional, and everlasting. Though she has passed, the essence of her spirit lingers in every fond recollection, a perpetual presence in the sanctuary of my heart. Lady’s story is not just a tale of a pet and her owner; it’s a legacy of love, imprinted forever on the pages of my life. As I nominate her today as a Delivery Dog, I can only celebrate her enduring influence, hoping her tale inspires others to cherish and advocate for the well-being of all dogs.

As dogs age, hearing loss may diminish their connection & heighten their risks, but it doesn’t have to limit their joy.

If dogs live long enough, they will most likely lose their hearing. Beyond missing the friendly call of their owner, dog’s lives are profoundly affected by deafness. A hearing-impaired dog is more likely to become injured, be abandoned, and be prematurely euthanized.
