Why This Dog Was So Special

Stubbs was my grandmother’s dog pictured here in 1903, and he was documented in a book she wrote about her early years on the prairie. My grandmother was born in 1896 and she is 16 in this photo with Stubbs and Nellie, her mare. She wrote many stories about the farm animals, and Stubbs played a huge role on the farm. Now Stubb’s life can be honored by the rest of the world instead of being a forgotten dog who once loyally served and protected a homesteading family on the prairie.

In the heart of the North Dakota prairie in the early 20th century, lived Stubbs, an English Sheepdog whose intelligence and valor became legendary within the family homestead. Stubb was more than a pet; he was an indispensable member of the family, a guardian of their livestock, and a faithful companion in the vast, open lands.

On a typical day, with the sun stretching its golden fingers across the prairie, Stubb could be seen working alongside the family, herding cattle, and responding to commands with an almost human understanding. His abilities were not just limited to routine tasks; they extended to moments of crisis, where his actions spoke volumes about his intelligence and loyalty.

One memorable day, as the family gathered around the table for their noon meal, a strange bull, agitated and bellowing, charged onto their property. Its eyes wild with fury, the bull posed an immediate threat to the safety and tranquility of the homestead. Without hesitation, the father commanded, “Stubb, take that fellow out of here.” Understanding the urgency, Stubb bolted out the door, confronting the intruder with a fearless stance.

The bull, menacing and strong, was not easily deterred. It attempted to fend off Stubb with its long, sharp horns. The family watched anxiously as Stubb skillfully dodged each attack, his agility keeping him just out of harm’s way. Despite the danger, Stubb’s determination did not waver; he was resolute in his duty to protect the homestead.

In a pivotal moment, guided by the father’s sharp command, “Take him by the nose, Stubb,” the dog faced the bull head-on. This command, unusual and risky, seemed to perplex Stubb momentarily, yet the trust between him and his owner propelled him forward. In a daring maneuver, Stubb charged, slipped under the bull’s horns, and clamped down on its nose. The bull, taken by surprise and pain, reared up, bellowing in rage, with Stubb hanging bravely from its nostrils.

The struggle was intense, with Stubb and the bull locked in a battle of wills. The bull twisted and turned, trying to shake off the determined dog, but Stubb held on with unyielding courage. Eventually, the bull, overwhelmed by Stubb’s tenacity and perhaps recognizing the futility of its resistance, broke free and fled, its retreat hastened by Stubb’s relentless pursuit.

This incident not only demonstrated Stubb’s bravery and skill but also solidified his reputation as a protector of the family and their livelihood. His actions that day went beyond mere animal instinct; they were a testament to his deep bond with the family and his understanding of his role in their lives.

Stubb’s legacy on the prairie was not just about the physical protection he provided. It was also about the spirit he embodied – one of loyalty, courage, and intelligence. His presence brought a sense of security to the family, knowing that, with Stubb around, they had more than a dog; they had a guardian who would stand by them, come what may.

In the annals of the Otto family history, Stubb remains a hero. His story is not merely one of animal instinct but of an extraordinary bond between a dog and his human family, set against the backdrop of the rugged, unforgiving prairie. Stubb was not just a working sheepdog; he was a beloved member of the family, a sentinel on guard, and a cherished companion whose memory continues to inspire and touch the hearts of those who read his story.

As dogs age, hearing loss may diminish their connection & heighten their risks, but it doesn’t have to limit their joy.

If dogs live long enough, they will most likely lose their hearing. Beyond missing the friendly call of their owner, dog’s lives are profoundly affected by deafness. A hearing-impaired dog is more likely to become injured, be abandoned, and be prematurely euthanized.
